What's in a book title?

A lot of blood, sweat and tears, apparently. Del Rey Editor-in-Chief Betsy Mitchell writes about the difficulty of coming up with the perfect book title. Good stuff!

My test readers and I can testify to the difficulty of title-picking.

My original title was "Still Haunted", which wasn't quite right as it suggested a ball-out ghost story (the paranormal elements are subtle and late in the novel) and by the end, the protagonist is not that haunted anymore.

My quest for the right title generated about 200 alternatives and led to warring factions among my test readers. I feared lives would be lost. *g*

Finally, my current title The Edge of Memory was something everyone could get behind. *snort*
